Overview

This module will provide you with a systematic understanding of the vocational and research evidence base within the increasingly expanding area of substance misuse. The module content will enable you to explore and develop a comprehensive understanding of the physical, psychological, and social aspects of substance misuse. The module has been designed to accommodate the learning needs of interdisciplinary staff from a broad range of professions who may encounter persons who misuse substances within their professional environments.

Module Details

Who is this module applicable to?

Teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers and allied health professionals. The module will also be delivered by inter-professional clinical and lecturing staff.

Aims

To you to explore and develop a comprehensive understanding of the physical, psychological, political and social aspects of substance use/misuse.

Content

  • Substance misuse awareness. Law on drug classification
  • Pregnancy and drug use;
  • Disease transmission, ethical and moral implications of drug use;
  • Drug substitutes
  • Harm reduction
  • Interventions and outcome measuring
  • Complex problems in substance misuse, service developments
  • Mortality rates and drugs
  • Drug presentations and mental illness
  • Addiction theories and theoretical perspectives, local and national policies

Assessment required for successful completion

A systematic review (70%) and seminar presentation (30%) to a group of peers forms the assessment criteria.

On successful completion you will

  • Critically examine theories of addiction and investigate the socio-political influences impacting upon substance misuse within a national and local context.
  • Develop a contextual understanding of the wider consequences of substance misuse, critically evaluating the specific health and social impact factors upon the substance misuser and immediate community.
  • Critically examine the associated health risks relating to illicit drug use /and alcohol, with an advancing criticality in your practice area, that develops both creative and innovative interventions.
