Overview
This module examines the ever-increasing dilemmas of working with individuals and groups who misuse substances. The Certificate in Substance misuse Interventions has four core modules for the University Certificate in Substance Misuse Interventions qualification. This is the first of 4 core modules. The module is mapped against Drug Alcohol National Occupational Standards [DANOS].
Module Details
Who is this module applicable to?
The module is open to all grades of staff and disciplines irrespective of professional qualifications, but the target group is aimed at those staff without a professional qualification/or recent academic study. The module has been developed at this level to facilitate the development of a large group of staff who will have considerable life experiences of working with substance misuse but may have limited underpinning theoretical knowledge or qualifications in their area of practice.
Aims
The aim is to develop the student's knowledge of psychopharmacology in substance misuse and their effects on the individual and the wider community. It also examines literature including national and local policies in relation to substance misuse and discusses legal and ethical issues.
Content
- Substance misuse and knowledge of all drugs and substances of misuse;
- Law on drug classification;
- Ethical implications;
- Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics, routes of use and impact of the drug on the user and society;
- Mortality rates and drugs;
- Drug presentations and common features encountered;
- Local and national policies and guidance;
- Consent, adults and treatment of persons under the age of 18;
- Defensive versus defensibility of practice;
- Accountability, confidentiality, human rights.
Assessment required for successful completion
The learning outcomes will be met in full on completion of the workbook and marked in line with level 4 marking criteria. Students wishing to access this module must have access to an internet ready computer for the duration of the module. This requirement will be checked through the admissions process.
On successful completion you will
- Review literature and national/local policies relevant to substances of misuse.
- Discuss psychopharmacology in substance misuse and effects on the individual user of drugs and wider community.
- Explore the legal and ethical issues relating to drug and or alcohol misuse on the individual user.
